6 ALTERNATIVE METALS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR WEDDING BANDS
November 26, 2021
When purchasing wedding bands in Singapore, couples have a habit of defaulting to two kinds of metals: platinum and gold. And why shouldn’t they? The two are the most well known metals for wedding rings, after all. Platinum, because of their incredible durability, and gold because…well…it’s been used in rings since ancient times so what’s not to like about it, right? But as we all know, those two aren’t the only metals that exist in this little blue dot that we live in and consequently, platinum and gold aren’t the only metals you can consider when buying or crafting your wedding rings.
In this post, the wedding jewellery pros of Vella Diamonds list the six alternative metals that you can consider for your wedding band set.
- Palladium – Whenever we hear the term “palladium”, most tend to think of the toxic substance that almost killed Iron Man in the film Iron Man 2. But believe it or not, palladium isn’t exactly as toxic as you may think it is. In fact, its toxicity is low enough to the point that it can be used to craft wedding bands if you’re looking for a suitable and less costly alternative to platinum. Apart from that, it’s also lightweight and hypoallergenic, making it suitable for people who suffer from skin allergies. The only downside, however, is that it’s not invulnerable to scratches and it can be difficult to resize, which can cause problems in the long run if you want to wear your ring for the rest of your days.
- Tungsten – Oftentimes, platinum is often seen as the strongest metal to use for crafting wedding rings in Singapore. Surprisingly enough, however, there’s actually something much stronger than platinum and that’s tungsten. Once used as a light bulb filament, this silvery metal is said to be four times stronger than even titanium and is a pure element that is also hypoallergenic similar to palladium. Thanks to its hardness, tungsten rings don’t require much maintenance compared to rings made of other metals but keep in mind that due to this very same hardness, they cannot be resized, meaning that you’ll need to get a ring that you’re certain will always fit you in the long run right off the bat.
- Sterling Silver – Like gold, silver has been valued by society for centuries and at one point in time, it was even considered more valuable than gold itself. Nowadays, however, it’s seen as one of the most affordable precious metals in the world and as such, many wedding ring sets are made of sterling silver. However, if you’re considering silver as the metal for your wedding bands, do keep in mind that it’s one of the softer metals and therefore, they can be scratched very easily. This means that you’ll need to be more careful in taking care of your wedding rings to ensure that they don’t sustain a significant amount of damage when you wear them.
- Titanium – On the other hand, if you want a wedding band that’s a bit more modern and unique while remaining incredibly durable at the same time, look no further than rings made of titanium. While this ring is somewhat weaker compared to tungsten, it’s still lightweight and hypoallergenic, allowing you to kill two birds with one stone by helping you avoid skin problems and give your rings a modern twist at the same time. Like tungsten, it’s incredibly scratch resistant, meaning it requires little to no maintenance. But also like the aforementioned metal, titanium is incredibly hard and therefore, rings made from this metal can’t be resized.
- Cobalt – Once upon a time, cobalt was an alloy that is often used in the medical and aerospace industries. Nowadays, however, jewellers in Singapore and all around the world also market them as a modern metal that is suitable to use as wedding jewellery. Four times harder than platinum, cobalt is hypoallergenic, durable, and fairly scratch-resistant. Apart from that, they’re also soft enough to allow for easy resizing compared to other metals nowadays, meaning that you can wear it for a lifetime even if your ring size changes in the future.
- Stainless Steel – Finally, if you’re really on a budget and you’re not exactly keen on wearing a ring that can’t be resized in the future, you can also consider a wedding band made of stainless steel. While it may sound odd to wear a ring made of a metal often used for flatware, stainless steel is durable and can provide your ring with a sturdy and modern look at the same time. It’s also not difficult to maintain since you can easily clean it with dish soap, water, and a soft cloth, allowing it to remain in good condition with little to no effort in the process.
